HONOLULU – Playing without two starters, the University of Hawai'i men's basketball team still managed to win handily over Northwestern State, 81-62, Monday at the Stan Sheriff Center in its final non-conference game before beginning Western Athletic Conference play.

 

Forward Roderick Flemings missed his second consecutive game and point guard Hiram Thompson missed his first start of the season. In their place, Dwain Williams scored 28 points, becoming the first UH player to hit the 20-point mark in three straight games since Matt Lojeski in 2007.

 

Senior forward Paul Campbell posted career-highs of 14 points and 15 rebounds for his second career double-double. The Toronto native was 5-of-8 from the field and blocked three Demon shot attempts. Guard Jeremy Lay, making his first start in place of Thompson, had 15 points, two assists, and two steals while forward Brandon Adams came off the bench and recorded 12 points and eight rebounds.

 

Williams, attempting to become the first UH player since Anthony Harris in 1995 to score 30-points in consecutive games, was coming off 36-point outing in a loss to Saint Mary's. The junior was 6-of-11 from the field, including 5-of-9 from 3-point range, and finished 11-of-13 from the free throw line before being subbed out with 1:30 left to play.

 

Despite the 19-point win and scoring 81 points, the 'Bows (7-6) shot 35.6 percent from the field and committed 17 turnovers. The biggest statistic was rebounding, where UH held a 53-38 advantage.

 

The game was marred by sloppy play and poor shooting in the first half as the team's combined for 22 turnovers, 26 fouls, and 31 percent shooting from the field. The 'Bows led 29-23 at the break behind Williams' 11 points.

 

In the second half, Hawai'i extended its lead from 2 to 11 following a 10-1 run during a three and a half minute stretch at the midway point. The 'Bows continued its aggressive guard play with penetrations to the hoop which resulted in 21-of-28 free throw shooting in the second half.

 

The win marked UH's 200^th victory at the Stan Sheriff Center since its opening in 1994. Hawai'i continues its nine-game homestand with WAC games against Idaho, Saturday, Jan. 2 and Boise State, Monday, Jan. 4. Tip-off is 7:05 p.m. both nights.
