Men’s Basketball Opens New Year, WAC Season With Idaho

Game Notes
Hiram Thompson shoots over Saint Mary's 2009

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i Rainbow Warrior basketball team opens its 31st season of Western Athletic Conference play by hosting Idaho, Saturday, Jan. 2. Tip-off is 7:05 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The Rainbow Warriors (7-6) completed their pre-conference schedule with a decisive 81-62 victory over Northwestern State on Monday. Four 'Bows scored in double figures led by guard Dwain Williams, who poured in a game-high 28 points for his third consecutive 20-plus point outing. UH played without starting point guard Hiram Thompson and all-WAC forward Roderick Flemings, however, both are expected to return to the starting lineup on Saturday.

Williams, who has scored in double figures in five straight games, has averaged 22.0 ppg during that span, which includes a 36-point performance against Saint Mary's, the highest total by a WAC player this season. The junior has taken over the team scoring lead over Flemings (15.0) with a 15.6 per game average.

Idaho (7-4) started the season 4-1 but have gone 3-3 since including Tuesday's 71-52 win over Lewis-Clark State. The Vandals are 2-4 on the road this season with wins over Utah (94-87) and North Dakota State (81-69).

In the WAC standings last season, the 'Bows finished eighth with a 5-11 record while the Vandals tied for third at 9-7. The teams split the season series with each team defending their homecourt. UI leads the overall series, 9-5, however, the 'Bows have won three of the last four in Honolulu.
