Hot-Shooting Aggies Defeat ’Bows

LOGAN, Utah – The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team ran into a hot-shooting Utah State Aggies team and fell 98-54 Monday night at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum. The Rainbow Warriors dropped to 8-9 overall and 1-3 in the Western Athletic Conference.
 
The Aggies (11-6, 1-2 WAC) led 54-26 at halftime after displaying an unbelievable half of shooting. USU shot 73.1 percent from the field (19-26) and converted 7-of-8 from behind the 3-point arc. Jared Quayle's 25-footer at the halftime buzzer typified the ways things went for the Aggies, who scored 12 unanswered during an 18-3 run that put the game away.
 
Tyler Newbold converted all five of his 3-point attempts and finished with 15 points for the Aggies. Tai Wesley had 15 points and nine rebounds and Nate Bendall chipped in 15 points for USU, which snapped a two-game WAC losing streak.
 
For the 'Bows, who played without leading rebounder Petras Balocka, guard Dwain Williams scored a team-high 12 points, all on 3-pointers. Forward Brandon Adams added 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
 
The Aggies, who defeated UH for the fifth straight time in Logan, opened up an 11-8 lead to 29-11 with just under eight minutes to play. Moments later, USU extended its lead to 30 with a 20-8 run, sparked by four 3-pointers, and went into the locker room ahead by 28.
 
USU started the second half with an 18-2 run which pushed the lead to 44. The Aggies led by as many as 49 at 82-33 midway through the half.
 
For the game, the Aggies shot 61.8 percent from the field and made 11-of-16 from 3-point range. Hawai'i shot 32.8 percent and leading scorer Roderick Flemings was held to eight points on 3-of-14 shooting.
 
The 44-point deficit was the largest WAC loss in school history. The previous record was 42 against TCU (126-84) in 1998.
 
The 'Bows return to Honolulu for a three-game homestand beginning with San Jose State, Sunday, Jan. 17. Tip-off is 7:05 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.
