HONOLULU - The No. 41 University of Hawai`i men's tennis team defeated Nevada, 5-2, in the Western Athletic Conference opener for both teams Sunday afternoon at the UH Tennis Complex. The Rainbow Warriors improved to 2-0 overall and 1-0 on the WAC with their second straight win to start the season.
In doubles action,
Dennis Lajola and
Jeremy Tweedt breezed past Alex Daruty and Stefan Dmitrovic, 8-1, on the No. 1 court in doubles, but the Wolf Pack (0-1, 0-1 WAC) claimed victories on the other two courts to seize the first point of the day.
After dropping the doubles points, UH won five of six matches in singles competition to claim the win.
Andreas Weber and
Leo Rosenberg made quick work of their opponents on the No. 2 and 4 courts, respectively. Rosenberg took down Dmitrovic, 6-0, 6-1, while Weber swept Laruent Garcin, 6-1, 6-1.
Philipp Eberhard earned a 7-5, 6-2 win over Augustin Myard at the No. 5 position and Tweedt clinched the all-deciding fourth point with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Daruty. Lajola won in thee sets over Wessim Derbel, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 1 court, but
Daniel Llarenas meet a different fate in three sets, falling in a tight match, 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (5), in the final action of the day on the No. 6 court.
The Rainbow Warriors will conclude its three-match homestand when they host UC Santa Barbara in non-conference action on Monday, Jan. 18. First serve is set for 9:00 a.m. at the UH Tennis Complex.
