Women’s Basketball Cruises Past San Jose State For Home Victory

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team built a large lead early Wednesday night and never looked back, beating San Jose State 63-49 for its fifth home win in its last six games at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The Rainbow Wahine improve to 9-12 overall and 3-5 in Western Athletic Conference play. San Jose State falls to 5-14 overall and 1-5 in conference play.

UH began the game on a 14-2 run and kept the pressure on, going up 37-13 at the break. The Rainbow Wahine are now 6-3 overall at the Stan Sheriff Center.

All 10 players that suited up for the Rainbow Wahine scored, led by Keisha Kanekoa, who scored 12 points and added six assists.

Leilani Galdones and Julita Bungaite each had nine points and Allie Patterson and Dita Liepkalne had eight points.

The Rainbow Wahine began the game on a 14-2 run over the first six minutes, and continued their hot play, building a 32-9 lead with five minutes left in the half. UH finished the half with a 37-13 lead, its largest halftime lead of the season.

Nine players scored for UH in the first half, including Kanekoa, who led the way with eight points. Liepkalne, Breanna Arbuckle and Galdones each had five points and Briauna Linton had four points.

The Rainbow Wahine shot 50 percent (14-28) in the half and played great defense, holding San Jose State to 19 percent shooting (4-21), while outrebounding the Spartans 21-11.

UH takes some much needed time off before hosting Fresno State on Feb. 6 at 5 p.m. The game will be the first of a doubleheader with the UH men's team, which will play Fresno State at 8 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.
