HONOLULU – In conjunction with the University of Hawai'i's Dr. Donnis Thompson Memorial Meet, the Rainbow Wahine track and field team will host an Elite Distance Carnival featuring an Elite Men's Mile Event in an effort to break the four-minute mile barrier, followed by a highly competitive Elite Women's 5000-meter Event.
Headling the field is former Rainbow Wahine distance runner Cheryl Smith, who competed for UH from 2000-02. Smith placed 15th at the NCAA Cross Country Championships in 2001, the same year she captured the WAC Championship individual title at the Kane'ohe Klipper Golf Course. She was also the WAC Cross Country Athlete of the Year in 2001 and is still the school's record holder in the 10,000-meter distance event (34:25.35).
Up until 1998 a similar event existed with Olympic caliber athletes racing down Kalakaua Avenue and it attracted hundreds of spectators. The intent is to revive this old tradition and in the process inspire young athletes in Hawai'i by allowing them to witness world class athletes go head to head on the island.
