Men's Volleyball Hosts NAIA’s No. 3 Hope International In Two-Match Series

Match Notes

HONOLULU – The No. 9 University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team will host a two-match series with the NAIA's third-ranked Hope International, Thursday, Feb. 18 and Friday, Feb. 19 at the Stan Sheriff Center. First serve for both matches is 7:00 p.m.

The Warriors (6-5, 4-4 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation), dropped a spot in this week's AVCA Division I-II rankings after splitting a two-match series with Alberta, Canada's third-ranked team, over the weekend. Freshman Jonas Umlauft led Hawai'i with 32 kills in the series (6.4 kps) while junior Joshua Walker added 24 (4.8 kps). Sophomore Steven Hunt, a native of Toronto, had 21 (4.2 kps) kills against his countrymen.

The Royals (5-3), who dropped a five-setter to top-ranked Cal Baptist last week, feature five players from Hawai'i on their roster. Among the islanders are kill leader Kaimi Guerreiro, the 2000 OIA East player of the year from Kalaheo High School and starting libero Noah Casaquit, a 2000 Moanalua High School graduate. In his first season with Hope after transferring from Long Beach City College, Guerreiro leads the team with a 3.72 kill average and is second in digs (2.91 dps). Casaquit, a transfer from Graceland University, leads the team in digs (3.19). Kahale Morgan, an 2009 all-state player from Kamehameha Schools-Kapalama, has a team-high 10 service aces.

Following Friday's match, fans will be treated to a concert featuring the band “Why Bother” as well as other UH students in the Hawaiian ensemble class, taught by instructor Chadwick Pang. Redshirt setter Kala'e Camarillo is a member of the band, who will play local jams and pop music. The name of the concert is called “Volley Ka Pila,” taken from the Hawaiian phrase kani ka pila which translated loosely is “to gather together and play music.”

Unlike last week's matches against Alberta, this week's matches will count toward UH's record.
