Donovan Provides Athletics' Financial Report To UH Regents

Athletics Director Jim Donovan presented a comprehensive report on the University of Hawai`i at Manoa Athletics Department's finances at the UH Board of Regents meeting Feb. 18 (click here).

Despite the tough economic climate, the department generated $22,122,798 in revenue during 2008-09, which is 81 percent of total revenue. The department received $5,377,776 in University and State support, which equates to 19 percent of its total revenue. The department's operating expenses for 2008-09 were $30,406,359.

NCAA figures for 2007-08 show that the nine athletics departments in the Western Athletic Conference, the league in which UH is a member, generated an average of 50 percent of their revenues and received 50 percent of their revenue from state appropriations and university support.

The university support that the other WAC schools received includes a student athletic fee, which the students pay on a per-semester basis. UH is the only WAC institution that does not charge its students an athletic fee.

“When you look at our financial situation from a big-picture standpoint, we are actually doing very well in regards to revenue generation as compared to our peer schools,” Donovan said. “However our goal is to have a balanced budget and ultimately pay down the accumulated deficit, but that goal remains difficult under the current funding model and our State's economic conditions. We're committed to working with all parties to address this situation and position UH for financial, athletic, and academic success in the years to come.”

At the meeting, the Board of Regents approved the external auditor's report for 2008-09 (click here).
