Box Score

LAS VEGAS- The University of Hawai'i softball team (6-3)  rebounded from the loss to No. Georgia Tech earlier in the day to trounce the Toreros of San Diego, 16-3 in five innings. Freshman pitcher Kaia Parnaby (4-0) earned the win and got lots offensive support, including home runs from Amanda Tauali'i, Jessica Iwata and Melissa Gonzalez.

Parnaby tossed a complete game, giving up three runs on eight hits with no walks and nine strike outs in five innings.

The 'Bows scored early and often against San Diego, starting in the first inning. Kelly Majam led the first inning off with a double to centerfield. Gonzalez later drove in  Majam with an opposite-field single to right. Tauali'i followed with her second home run of the day and fourth home run of the season. The two-run blast to right was right into the teeth of a strong incoming wind.

Hawai'i increased their lead in the second inning to 7-0. Majam again led things off with a single to right and Jenna Rodriguez continued the rally with a base hit to left. A walk to Gonzalez loaded the bases, but USD was able to get two outs of a fly out to left and a strike out. Traci Yoshikawa then stepped up and drove in both Majam and Rodriguez with a double to leftfield. Iwata then followed with her first career home run that was launched high over the left-centerfield fence.

San Diego got two runs back in the top of the third on a two-run home run from Kristen Gensler. The two runs were the first earned runs that Parnaby has given up this season.

The 'Bows tacked on one run in the third on a two-out RBI single to right by Tauali'i that scored Majam, pushing UH's lead to 9-2.

Hawai'i then put the game away, scoring seven runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Toreros didn't help themselves, as they loaded the bases with walks to Yoshikawa and Iwata, and then beaned designated player Makani Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu. Jocelyn Enrique then entered her first game as a Rainbow Wahine, and hit a grounder back to the pitcher. On the play, the pitcher attempted to come home unsuccesfully, allowing Yoshikawa to score from third. Majam then drew a walk to force Iwata home. A double to left drove in both pinch-runner Brynne Buchanan and Enrique, but Gonzalez followed with the coup de grace, a two -run home run to centerfield, giving UH a commanding 16-2 lead going into the fifth inning.

The Toreros tried to mount a rally in the fifth, getting two hits and scoring a run in the final frame, but with the mercy rule in effect, the game was over.

The 'Bows were led offensively by Majam, who went 3-for-3 with four runs scored, a double and an RBI; Rodriguez, who was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI; Tauali'i, 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI; Iwata scored two runs with a home run and three RBI; and Gonzalez tied a career game-high four RBI with a home run and three runs scored.
