Box Score

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif.—The University of Hawai'i softball team (8-4) dropped the opening game of the 2010 Cathedral City Classic to Oklahoma State, 4-0. Hawai'i pitcher Kaia Parnaby suffered her first loss of the season, despite a 10 strike out performance today at the Big League Dreams Sports Park's Fenway field in Cathedral City, Calif..

Oklahoma State pitcher, Anna Whiddon (4-2), stymied the UH offense, firing a one-hit shut out. She had three walks and six strike outs in the complete game effort.

Parnaby (5-1) also tossed a complete game, giving up four runs--three of which were unearned--on six hits with no walks.

The Cowgirls broke open a scoreless game in the top of the fifth. Amy Graham started the rally with a one-out single to centerfield. Chelsea Garcia hit a ground ball back to Parnaby on the mound. But on the play, Parnaby tried to go to second, but committed an error, allowing both runners to be safe. The 'Bows, who were hitless through the first five innings, had their best scoring opportunity in the bottom of the sixth. Katie Grimes led the inning off with a walk and Kelly Majam followed with a single up the middle that broke the no-hitter bid. But OSU pitcher, Anna Whiddon bore down and got a strike out and a foul, pop-up to the shortstop for two quick outs. Amanda Tauali'i then reached first on an error by the shortstop to load the bases. But Whiddon got Jessica Iwata to line-out to center to end the rally and the inning.

OSU tacked on two insurance runs in the top of the seventh on an RBI single to left by Gearhart with the bases loaded. On the play an error on the catcher, allowed Garcia to hustle home for the Cowgirls' fourth and final run of the game.
