Softball Battles Hard, But Falls to Oregon, 4-3

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - The University of Hawai'i softball team (9-5) fell to Oregon, 4-3, today at the Cathedral City Classic. Freshman pitcher Kaia Parnaby took the loss in a complete game effort while Amanda Tauali'i and Jenna Rodriguez both went 2-for-4 to lead UH on offense.
 
Parnaby (5-2) threw six complete innings, giving up four runs on 11 hits with three strike outs.
 
Hawai'i jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Kelly Majam opened the game with an opposite-field double, tried to leg it out for a triple, but was thrown out by the centerfielder at third. Jessica Iwata then drew a one-out walk. Oregon then pulled out starting pitcher Samantha Skillingstad and brought in Jessica Moore. Moore then gave up back-to-back singles to centerfield by Melissa Gonzalez and Amanda Tauali'i to load the bases. Traci Yoshikawa then drove in Iwata with a single to center. Later, with two outs and the bases still loaded, Kanani Pu'u-Warren got hit by a pitch to drive in Gonzalez for UH's second run.
 
The Ducks then scored a single run in the second, third, fourth, and fifth inning to take a 4-0 lead. In the second, and RBI single by Allie Burger drove in Kelsey Chambers from third. Chambers came back in the next frame to drive in Neena Bryant with a single to right. The Ducks' Ashley Kivett scored on a sacrifice fly by Bryant in the fourth, and Oregon rounded out their scoring in the fifth with another RBI single by Chambers that drove in Samantha Pappas. Chambers led the Ducks on offense today, going 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI.
 
The 'Bows had two runners on with no outs in the fifth, and two runners on in the sixth with two outs, but were unable to cash in the opportunities.
 
But in the seventh, UH broke through on an RBI single by Tauali'i that drove in pinch-runner Alex Aguirre from second. Later Jenna Rodriguez hit a double to left to put runners at second and third, but UO's Moore settled down and got a swinging strike out to end the game.
 
The Ducks' Skillingstad started the game, but faced just two batters. She gave up a hit, a run, with one walk. Moore handcuffed Hawai'i in relief to earn the win. She fired seven innings, giving up two runs on eight hits with a wakl and 10 strike outs.
 
Hawai'i will complete its first roadtrip of the year tomorrow with two games against perennial powers, No. 9 Oklahoma and No. 2 Arizona at 10:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. respectively.
