Women's Water Polo Finishes Fifth At UC Irvine Invitational

IRVINE, Calif. - The sixth-ranked University of Hawai`i women's water polo team concluded the UC Irvine Invitational today with two victories over No. 10 San Jose State and No. 8 Arizona State. The Rainbow Wahine (8-6, 0-2 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) defeated the Spartans 10-5 and Arizona State 9-7 for a fifth place finish. 

UH began its final day strong, edging out SJSU 4-1 in the first quarter. The Rainbow Wahine continued their run in the second quarter, keeping the Spartans scoreless and muscling in two goals to gain a comfortable 6-1 lead at halftime. 

Attempting to answer back, the Spartans matched a pair of goals to UH in the third and fourth quarter but it was not enough to steal the lead. UH, shutting SJSU out 10-5 advanced to play Arizona State for fifth place. 

Senior center Leonie Van Der Molen performed a hat trick for the Rainbow Wahine, scoring three of their 10 goals. 

In the first quarter against Arizona State, UH lagged just behind the Sun Devils 3-2 but went on a 3-1 run in the second, stealing the lead at halftime 5-4. 

The Rainbow Wahine continued to dominate the Sun Devils in the third, scoring another three goals over Arizona State's one. The Sun Devils picked it up in the final quarter, scoring a pair of goals but could not climb back. UH sealed the match putting in one goal to shut out Arizona State for a 9-7 victory. 

Leonie Van Der Molen and junior Carmen Eggens lead the Rainbow Wahine again, each performing a hat trick. 

Next, UH returns to the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex to take on No. 3 UCLA for its third MPSF match of the season on March 6 at 7:00 p.m. HT.
