Softball Loses Extra Inning Heartbreaker To No.1 Washington, 1-0

Box Score

HONOLULU--The University of Hawai`i softball team (11-7) lost an extra inning heartbreaker to No.1 Washington, 1-0 tonight at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. UW scored a single run in the top of the eighth inning on a fielding error to defeat the 'Bows on the second day of the Bank of Hawaii Invitational in front a crowd of 871.

Hawai`i's Stephanie Ricketts took a no-hitter into the fifth inning, and held the powerful Huskies at bay through the first seven innings. She fired eight innings, scattering three hits and allowing the one unearned run with three walks and five strike outs.

The Rainbow Wahine out-hit UW, 4-to-3, but were unable to capitalize with runners in scoring position, as reigning National Player of the Year, pitcher Danielle Lawrie, bore down and got stronger in the final three innings. Lawrie struck out seven of the final nine batters, including all three in the eighth. She finished the game giving up four hits with no walks and 15 strike outs.

In the third, UH got a lead off double to the right-centerfield gap by Alex Aguirre. But she was stranded there after a pair of strike outs and a ground out to first.

The 'Bows had runners at first and second with two outs in the fourth, but a failed double steal erased the runner at first snuffed out the rally.

In the sixth, UH had their best scoring opportunity after Kelly Majam ripped a triple down the rightfield line to start the sixth inning with the meat of the UH line-up coming up. But Lawrie thwarted any rally, and went on to retire the next three batters in order.

The 'Bows are the second seed after pool play and will face No. 3 seed, East Carolina tomorrow at 10:00am on the final day of the Invitational. No. 1 seed Washington will battle No. 4 seed, Seattle at 12:00 p.m.
