'Bows Fall To DePaul, 6-2

Box Score

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai`i softball team (16-9) fell to DePaul, 6-2 on the second day of the Pepsi Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament. Hawai`i's Kaia Parnaby (9-4) took the loss, throwing three-and-a-third innings today at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Parnaby gave up three runs on five hits with a walk and four strike outs. Jenna Rodriguez closed the game in relief, tossing the final 3.2 innings, giving up three runs on four hits with a strike out. Rodriguez, who started the game as the designated player, also went 2-for-3 at the plate.

DePaul's Shea Warren led the second inning off with a solo home run to centerfield. The Blue Demons added two more runs in the top of the fourth on a two-run home run to leftfield by Marla Mathews.

The 'Bows got a run back in the bottom of the fifth. Pinch-hitter Stephanie Ricketts recorded her first career hit, a solo, line drive home run over the centerfield fence to cut Blue Demons' lead to 3-1.

But DePaul pulled away in the top of the seventh, posting three unearned runs in the top of the seventh. Samantha Dodd started the rally with a single down the leftfield line to lead the inning off. A sacrifice bunt by Brittney Ynniguez pushed Dodd into scoring position. Plese then hit a pop up behind second, but a fielding error left runners at the corners. Tara Voss then grounded out to third, allowing Dodd to score. A fielding error on the pitcher allowed Plese to cross the plate, and later, Alex Morocco scored on an RBI single by Simone Ashkar that extended DePaul's lead to 6-1.

Hawai`i got one run back in the bottom of the seventh on an opposite-field, solo home run by Amanda Tauali'i.

The Blue Demons' freshman pitcher Bree Brown stymied the 'Bows at the plate, racking up 13 strike outs on the day. She gave up just two runs on four hits—two of which were home runs—with no walks.

Hawai`i, the second seed of the tourney after pool play, will now play Troy, the third seeded team.
