Hawai‘i Falls To No. 13/12 Cal In Tourney Finale

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i softball team (22-11) lost the final game of the Chevron Spring Fling Tournament to No. 13/12 California, 5-1. Hawai'i pitcher, Kaia Parnaby (12-5) suffered the loss, while Cal's Jolene Henderson earned the win and Most Outstanding Pitcher honors for the tourney. UH's Kelly Majam was voted Most Valuable Player for the tournament today at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Parnaby kept the Golden Bears at bay through the first four innings, but in the fifth Cal erupted for four runs. Frani Echivarria and Shannon Thomas led the inning off with back-to-back doubles to score the first run of the game. Parnaby then walked Valerie Arioto which brought Lindsey Ziegenhirt to the plate. She proceeded to smack a three run home run to leftfield to give Cal a 4-0 lead.

Hawai'i's Majam responded in the bottom half of the fifth with a solo home run to centerfield, cutting the lead to 4-1. For Majam, it was her fifth home run of the tournament and 15th for the season. Her 15 home runs ties her for fourth in the UH single-season record book. She is tied with former All-Americans Stacey Porter (2002), Tyleen Tausaga (2007) and current Rainbow Wahine, Amanda Tauali'i (2009). Hawai'i's single season home run record is held by All-American Kate Robinson, who hit 21 in 2008, her senior season.

Cal tacked one more run in the sixth. Speedy Elia Reed hit a double to left-centerfield and scored on a fielding error by the second baseman that allowed her to cross the plate from second base.

Parnaby threw 4.1 innings, giving up four runs on five hits with four strike outs and four walks. Stephanie Ricketts threw the final 2.2 innings, giving up one unearned run with three walks and three strike outs.

California pitcher, Henderson tossed a complete game win, giving up one run on four hits with five walks and six strike outs.

The Rainbow Wahine have now completed their non-conference schedule for 2010. The 'Bows open their Western Athletic Conference season with a three-game series against San Jose State starting this Friday, March 27.
