Balentine, a freshman from Lodi, Calif., is currently in fourth place after the first four disciplines with a score of 2,840 points. Waldhuber, a sophomore from Slovenia, is in ninth place with 2,624 points. The two are among 11 competitors.
Balentine, who is competing in her first career heptathlon, won the high jump (5-7.75/1.72m); placed seventh in the shot put (31-3.75/9.54m); eighth in the 100-meter hurdles (15.47); and 10th in the 200-meter dash (27.37).
Waldhuber placed fourth in the shot put (34-0.75/10.38m); seventh in the high jump (4-11.5/1.51m); ninth in the 200-meter (27.20); and 10th in the 100-hurdles (15.77).
The heptathlon concludes on Thursday with the final three events – long jump, javelin, and 800-meter run.
