Grimes Named Verizon Wireless WAC Hitter Of The Week

DENVER – Hawai`i's Katie Grimes was named the Verizon Western Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week for March 29-April 4. This is the first honor of the season and second of her career for Grimes.

Grimes, a senior catcher from Tampa, Fla., hit .556 with a 1.667 slugging percentage and .636 on-base percentage as the Rainbow Wahine swept New Mexico State on the road last week. Grimes drove in a team-high eight runs while leading the 'Bows with three home runs in the three-game series. In the first game, Grimes started UH's home run barrage with a two-run bomb in the third inning that broke open a scoreless game. In the following inning, she came through with a two-out, RBI single for her third RBI of the game. In the second game of the series, Grimes launched a career-high two homers and scored a career-high three runs in a 14-3 win. She also threw out the only attempt at a stolen base by the Aggies. In the series finale, Grimes had a bases-clearing double that helped lift UH to a five-inning, 13-1 win.

Louisiana Tech's Meghan Krieg was named the WAC Pitcher of the Week.

As a sophomore, Grimes earned her first career WAC Hitter of the Week award on May 6, 2008 after going 5-for-8 with a home run and a 1.000 slugging percentage against Utah State.

Grimes is the fourth Rainbow Wahine to earn the WAC weekly honor this season. Freshman centerfielder, Kelly Majam, has earned the award twice, as has sophomore pitcher, Stephanie Ricketts. Freshman pitcher, Kaia Parnaby, was also selected for the accolade in the second week of the season.

The Rainbow Wahine continue their roadtrip with a three game series at Utah State (14-15, 3-2 WAC) starting with a single game on Tues., Apr. 6 at 3:00 p.m. and ending with a doubleheader on Wed., Apr. 7 beginning at 1:00 p.m. The Aggies are coming of a doubleheader sweep over Nevada this past week in Logan, Utah. The series finale was postponed due to inclement weather.

Hawai'i concludes their week long odyssey of playing nine games in three stats in eight days, with their first ever series at Boise State (14-21, 4-2 WAC). The 'Bows will play a single game on Fri., Apr. 9 at 3:00 p.m. and a doubleheader on Sat., Apr. 10 starting at 1:00 p.m.
