No. 25 Hawai‘i Hits Five Homers To Down Boise State, 15-1; Majam Breaks Home Run Record

Box Score

BOISE—The 25th-ranked University of Hawai'i softball team (31-11, 9-0 WAC) hit five home runs to overwhelm Boise State (15-23, 4-3 WAC), 15-1 in five innings, today at the Mountain Cove Field. Freshman Kelly Majam broke UH's home run record with a three-run blast in the second inning, while Stephanie Ricketts earned a complete-game win.

Majam's 22nd homer broke the school's single-season record set by All-American Kate Robinson in 2008. Majam continues to lead the nation in home runs and is the only player in Division I to have hit over 20 homers thus far this season. She tied Robinson's record of 21 in Wednesday's first win at Utah State. Hawai'i also broke the school's team single-season record of 84 homers in Wednesday's second game in Logan, Utah. Today's five round-trippers brings their season total to 94. The 'Bows have now hit at least four home runs in 11 games this season—including in all six games on this roadtrip. Majam also led the 'Bows in the game, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI and her two hits extends her hitting streak to a career-high 17 games. Majam is now just one home run shy of tying of the WAC single-season record set by Fresno State's Christina Clark in 2004.

Ricketts (16-6, 7-0 WAC) threw all five innings, giving up one unearned run on four scattered hits. She walked two and fanned four, bringing her strike out total to 104 on the season. It marked her fifth win in six games on this roadtrip.

It was the 13th time this season that the 'Bows have won a game by the eight-run mercy rule.

UH jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first on Melissa Gonzalez's two-run blast that scored Jessica Iwata. For Gonzalez, it was her 12th homer of 2010.

The top of the second started with Amanda Tauali'i getting hit by a pitch and Katie Grimes drawing a walk. Majam then came to the plate and launched the record-breaking home run, driving in pinch-runners Brynne Buchanan and Tara Anguiano. UH took a 5-0 lead into the bottom of the second inning.

The 'Bows then posted five more runs in the top of the third, with two more balls leaving the park. Alex Aguirre hit a two-run homer that scored Traci Yoshikawa, who had reached earlier on a walk. Kanani Pu'u-Warren and Tauali'i were beaned to put two runners on board for Grimes, who then launched the second homer of the inning and fourth of the game, giving UH a 10-0 lead. It was Aguirre's seventh and Grimes' eighth home runs of the season.

The Broncos got one run back in the bottom of the fourth after an error on the first baseman allowed Kelly Sweeney to score from second.

But the 'Bows got the run back and more in the top of the fifth. Tauali'i reached on a base hit but was forced out on a fielder's choice from third, leaving Grimes on first. Majam was then hit by a pitch to put two runners on for Iwata, who came through with an RBI single to the right-centerfield gap. The hit drove in Grimes from second. Gonzalez then reached first on an error on the shortstop, which allowed Majam to cross the plate from third. Jenna Rodriguez then finished the scoring with a three-run home run to score both Iwata and Gonzalez, increasing UH's lead to 15-1.

Boise State's Allie Crump (9-14) suffered the loss, giving up 10 runs on six hits with two walks in 2.1 innings, while Lela Work finished the game, throwing the final 2-1/3. She gave up five runs on three hits with three strike outs.

The three-game series with the Broncos (15-23, 4-3 WAC) ends tomorrow, April 10 with a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m. (MST)
