Box Score

RUSTON, La. – Behind a solid pitching performance and four home runs, the University of Hawai'i Rainbow baseball team (20-18, 3-6 WAC) beat the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs (19-17, 4-5) 10-0, in a game called after seven innings due to the league's run rule, at J.C. Love Field Thursday. Josh Slaats (4-2) got the complete-game shutout victory while Jamey Bradshaw (4-1) got the loss for LTU.

Jeffrey Van Doornum led the way for the 'Bows, going 3-for-4 with two home runs, a double and three runs scored. David Freitas also homered, going 2-for-5 with two runs and three RBI with Kevin Macdonald also providing a two-run homer. Kolten Wong was 3-for-5 with a run with Piikea Kitamura going 2-for-4 with a triple, one RBI and one run. Collin Bennett also went 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI.

UH got the scoring started early as Kitamura tripled in a run in the first inning, giving the 'Bows an early 1-0 edge.

The Rainbows then turned it up in the top of the third. Freitas, Bennett and Garcia all drove in a run each before Macdonald hit a two-run home run to left, capping the five-run inning to extend UH's lead to 6-0.

That would prove to be more than enough for Slaats, who struck out four while allowing just five hits and two walks in 7.0 innings.

Hawai'i went to the long ball again in the top of the fourth as Freitas and Van Doornum hit back-to-back homers, a two-run and solo shot, getting their advantage to 9-0.

Van Doornum again homered in the top of the sixth to get it to 10-0 before the game was called after seven innings.

The series continues with a game at 6 p.m. (1 p.m. HST) tomorrow.
