HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i men's basketball team held its annual awards banquet Thursday night at the Hale Koa Hotel in Waikiki. Junior guard
Hiram Thompson took home four awards, while senior
Roderick Flemings claimed the Art Woolaway Most Outstanding Player Award for the second straight year.
Flemings completed his senior season at UH as the team's leading scorer, averaging 16.6 points per game. The senior from Dallas, Texas, finished his two-year career with 964 points, which ranks 17th all-time in school history. Flemings scored 20-plus points in 10 games on the year, including a career-high 39 points against Cal Poly which was the most points ever by a UH player in the Stan Sheriff Center and the fourth-high total in program history. Flemings was selected as Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week twice and was named all-WAC honorable mention by season's end.
Thompson, meanwhile, took home a team-high four awards. The native of Sacramento, Calif., was the team's Best Playmaker (3.9 apg) and Best Free Throw Shooter (.742), and earned the Captain Award. He was also selected as the Ah Chew Goo Most Inspirational Player, along with seniors
Adhar Mayen and
Brandon Adams.
Adams was also selected as the Most Improved Player. The 6-7 forward was the only player to appear in every game during the season. He averaged 8.0 ppg and 5.2 rpg. and turned it up during league play as the team's top rebounder (7.2 rpg) and second-leading scorer (10.3 ppg) in WAC games.
Flemings was the Best Scorer (16.6 ppg),
Petras Balocka was the team's Best Rebounder (8.0 rpg), and the award for Best Defensive Player went to center
Paul Campbell. The 6-10 center from Toronto, Canada led the team with 28 blocks. Sophomore
Ji Xiang, who is on track to graduate later this year, earned the Academic Award.
The Rainbow Warriors finished the 2009-10 campaign with a 10-20 overall record and a 3-13 mark in the Western Athletic Conference.
