Water Polo To Open MPSF Championships Against Host UCLA

HONOLULU – The fifth-ranked University of Hawai'i women's water polo team heads to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships in Los Angeles, Calif., hosted by UCLA beginning Friday. UH is the No. 4 seed and plays No. 5 seed and tournament host UCLA on Friday at 3 p.m. PT. All matches will be played at the Spieker Aquatics Complex. 
           
The Rainbow Wahine ended their regular season tied for third with fourth-ranked UCLA and third-ranked California in the MPSF standings, with a 4-3 record. Overall the Rainbow Wahine are 16-7.
 
The three-day tournament kicks off on Friday, with the winner earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships May 14 in San Diego.
 
UH last met UCLA on March 6, when the Rainbow Wahine beat the Bruins 9-8 in six overtime periods. Last season the Rainbow Wahine opened the MPSF tournament against the Bruins in Honolulu, and were defeated 8-7, but went on to place fifth in the conference and earn a seed in the NCAA Championships.
 
Eggens, Genee, Majuri Carry Rainbow Wahine Offense and Defense
For four weeks straight, sophomore Monika Eggens has remained at the top of the MPSF in goal-scoring. She carries a heavy 2.30 goals per match average and has tallied up 53 goals this season for the Rainbow Wahine. Although Monika Eggens leads the team in scoring goals, Dagmar Genee, junior Saara Majuri and freshman Amarens Genee have been leading the team in other areas on offense and defense. Dagmar Genee has grabbed a total of 42 steals to strengthen UH's defense. Her sister, Amarens Genee also serves as an offensive threat, leading the team with 30 kick-outs drawn. Majuri, also a strong offensive force, leads the Rainbow Wahine with a total of 23 assists.
 
Three Rainbow Wahine Lead MPSF In Goal-Scoring
As of the April 19 MPSF goal-scoring statistics, Monika Eggens, her sister Carmen Eggens, Leonie Van Der Molen rank among the 10 best in the conference. Monika Eggens leads the entire conference with a 2.30 goals per match average, with a total of 53 goals in 23 matches. Van Der Molen is currently tied for 8th with Arizona State's Lynlee Smith averaging 1.71 goals per match. Carmen Eggens is tied for 10th with Arizona State's Shannon Haas, tallying a total of 37 goals in 23 matches with a 1.61 gpm. average.
