Women’s Tennis Gears Up For WAC Tournament Run

FRESNO, Calif. – The University of Hawai`i women's tennis team heads to Fresno, Calif., for the 2010 Western Athletic Conference Tournament, April 30-May 2. The Rainbow Wahine (11-13, 5-3 WAC) earned the No. 4 seed and will face the No. 5 seed Idaho Vandals (20-5, 4-4 WAC) on Friday at 11:00 a.m. PT (8:00 a.m. HT).

UH began their season with a challenging schedule, filled with top-ranked teams, but managed to finish strong. The Rainbow Wahine (11-13) closed out the regular-season on a four-match win streak and finished fourth in the WAC with a 5-3 mark.

Three members of the Rainbow Wahine squad—Aglae Van den Bergh, Katarina Poljakova and Sophie Kobuch, are on a four-match win streaks in singles action. Lone senior Kobuch holds an impressive dual record of 15-8 in singles while playing at the top three courts.  Kobuch has also been on a tear in doubles play along with partner Poljakova as the duo has won five straight and nine of their last 10 matches.  Alyssa Nafarrete and Barbara Pinterova have also been unstoppable in doubles, going 12-2 in their last 14 matches.

If UH defeats Idaho, they will continue tournament play against No. 1 seed Boise State on Saturday, May 1st in a semifinal match. The Rainbow Wahine advanced to the WAC Tournament semifinals for the first time in school history last season while hosting the event in Honolulu.
