Water Polo Bounces Back With Victory Over Arizona State At MPSF Tourney

LOS ANGELES – The University of Hawai'i women's water polo team bounced back on Saturday morning with a 7-4 victory over Arizona State in the consolation bracket of the MPSF Tournament hosted by UCLA in Los Angeles. 

The No. 4 seed Rainbow Wahine (17-8) rallied in the second half, starting with strong defense and a three-goal third period for the victory over the No. 8 seed Sun Devils (16-14).

UH advances to the fifth-place game on Sunday afternoon at 11:30 a.m. PT. UH will face the winner of the San Jose State-San Diego State game, which will be played later Saturday afternoon.

To start the fourth period, Arizona State cut into the Hawai'i lead, scoring 35 seconds into the period, to make the score 5-4 UH. Amarens Genee answered with her third goal of the game at the 5:48 mark to increase the Rainbow Wahine lead to 6-4. UH opened up a larger cushion with a goal by Monika Eggens at the 2:55 mark of the fourth for a 7-4 lead.

After going scoreless in the second period, UH tied the game 3-3 in the third period with a goal by Dagmar Genee at the 3:36 mark. Just 36 seconds later, sister Amarens Genee scored her first goal of the game to give UH its first lead at 4-3. Amarens Genee scored her second goal a minute later, giving the Rainbow Wahine a 5-3 advantage.

With the score tied to 2-2 to start the second period, Arizona State broke the tie after a minute of play, leading 3-2. Both teams couldn't manage a goal the rest of the period, as the Sun Devils led 3-2 at the break.

In the first period, Arizona State scored the game's first goal, coming 2:25 into the game on a power-play advantage. UH tied the game 1-1 at the 2:27 mark of the first half on Saara Majuri's first goal of the tournament. Arizona State scored on its second power-play advantage at the 1:06 mark of the first period to regain a 2-1 lead. Monika Eggens tied the game 2-2 with three seconds left at the end of the first period on her fourth goal of the tournament.
