No. 19/23 Hawai`i Opens NCAA Regionals Against UC Davis

NCAA Regional Notes

STANFORD, Calif.—The No. 19/23-ranked University of Hawai`i softball (44-13, 19-1 WAC) team enters the 2010 NCAA Regionals as the 16th seed overall, and will face Big West champion, UC Davis (26-27, 15-6 Big West) in the opening game on Friday, May 21 at 3:00 p.m. (PST) at the Smith Family Stadium on the Stanford University campus.

The other side of the bracket features Stanford (36-17, 8-13 PAC-10) hosting Texas Tech (36-16, 7-11 Big 12) in the second game of the day at 6:00 p.m.

The Rainbow Wahine captured the Western Athletic Conference's regular season for the third time, with a 19-1 record. Last week, the 'Bows won the WAC Softball Tournament for the first time in school history, posting a 3-1 record on the week.

Hawai`i defeated UC Davis earlier this year, 8-5 on Feb. 26 at the Cathedral City Classic. Last year, the Aggies defeated UH, 8-1 (Feb. 15, 2009) at UNLV's Louisville-Slugger Desert Classic. Hawai`i has also faced Stanford twice this year in the season opening, Oceanic Time Warner Cable Paradise Classic. The Cardinal took the first game, 2-0, but the 'Bows bounced back to hit four home runs and defeat Stanford, 11-5 on Feb. 13. Stanford leads the series over UH, winning five-of-seven games. UH holds a 2-1 advantage against Texas Tech in series history. The last time the two teams played each other was in Honolulu in the 2008 Chevron Spring Fling Tournament. UH won that game, March 14, 2008, 4-1.

This is the ninth time that head coach Bob Coolen has led his Rainbow Wahine into the NCAA tournament, and third time in four years. He is the only UH softball coach to take UH into the post-season. The 'Bows last appearance in the NCAA tourney was in 2008, when UH won twice against Mississippi State, but also fell twice to eventual 2008 Women's College World Series champions, Arizona State.

Hawai`i has won one Regional title in 2007, when it swept through the Los Angeles Regional, defeating UCSB, UCLA and Loyola Marymount en route to becoming the first WAC team to advance to a Super Regional. In the '07 Super Regionals, the 'Bows were one win short of punching their ticket to the WCWS, but fell, two games-to-one against Tennessee in Knoxville.
