Ron Lee Announces Resignation From Football Coaching Staff

HONOLULU – University of Hawai'i co-offensive coordinator Ron Lee, an 11-year veteran on the Warrior coaching staff, announced his resignation effective June 15, 2010. Lee spent the past two seasons as offensive coordinator and has tutored the receivers for all 11 seasons.

“Ron Lee is a legend in Hawai'i,” said UH head coach Greg McMackin. “Ron talked to me prior to spring ball about his wish to retire. I asked him to go through spring ball and told him I would support his decision.

“Ron and I have been friends for many years. He is a great person who has made an outstanding contribution to football, the University of Hawai'i and in the entire state. We thank him for his years of dedication and wish him well. We will miss him.”

“I appreciated my time at the University of Hawai'i,” Lee said. “It was a lot of fun but its time to move on. What I'll miss the most are the players and the relationships and friendships I've built with them. I wish all the players and my fellow coaches the best of luck.”

Lee joined the UH staff as receivers coach in 1999, under then-head coach June Jones. Last season, Greg Salas ranked fourth nationally in receiving yards per game (122.3) and sixth in receptions (8.2). He also set a single-game school record against New Mexico State with 16 catches. He was one of only four players to reach 100 catches in a season (106) while his 1,590 receiving yards was the second-highest single-season total in school history.

Lee served as offensive coordinator for the past two seasons under McMackin. Last year, Lee's offense finished 17th nationally and averaged 434.5 yards per game, while UH's passing offense ranked second at 338.6.

In 2007, slot receivers Ryan Grice-Mullen and Davone Bess ranked fifth and seventh nationally in receiving yards, and both received free-agent contracts with NFL teams after foregoing their respective senior seasons.

In 2002, Warrior receiver Ashley Lelie was drafted by the Denver Broncos as the 19th overall pick in the NFL draft, the school's highest draft pick. In 2004, receiver Chad Owens led the WAC and finished fourth nationally in receptions per game (7.85) and ninth nationally in receiving yards per game (99.2).

Under Lee's tutelage, receivers coached by Lee own or co-own 19 school receiving records. The top five receivers statistically in school history have played under Lee (Bess, Grice-Mullen, Jason Rivers, Owens and Lelie).
