Weather Woes Grounds Women’s Sailing Team

MADISON, Wisc. – The University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine sailing team was denied a chance to compete for a national title when Mother Nature halted competition at the ICSA Women's National Championship semifinals, May 25-26, at Lake Mendota.

Due to thunderstorms and a lack of wind, not a single race went off during the first two days of competition. The ICSA women's nationals is a four-day event with the first two days dedicated to semifinal round qualifying. The Rainbow Wahine were one of 18 teams set to compete for nine spots in the finals. Nine other schools had already qualified for the finals by placing at the top of their respective district championships.

Weather conditions scrapped the semifinals, and instead the top 18 teams were slotted for the championship round. The Pacific Coast Sailing Conference is allotted two spots and based on their fourth-place finish in the PCCSC Championship, the Rainbow Wahine failed to qualify for the final two days of competition.

Hawai'i still has a shot at another title when it competes in the ICSA Team Race Championship, beginning on Saturday, May 29. Women's sailors Tahnee Allman, Darla Baldwin, Lani Johnson, Jaclyn McLoughlin and Hannah Tuson-Turner will be joined by Zachary Hester, William Petersen and Ryan Wild for the three-day event.
