Kaufman Wins High Jump At NACAC Championships

MIRAMAR, Fla. – University of Hawai'i track and field athlete Amber Kaufman added another championship to her outstanding 2010 track season by winning the North American, Central American, Caribbean (NACAC) Championships in Miramar, Fla.
 
Representing the United States, Kaufman cleared 6-1.25 (1.86m) to easily win the competition over fellow American April Sinkler (5-11.25/1.81m). Trinidad and Tabago's Caleigh Bacchus claimed the bronze with a jump of 5-09.25 (1,76m).
 
Athletes from 32 member-nations competed in the championships, held at the Miramar Ansin Sports Complex, July 9-11. The high jump competition took place on Saturday, July 10.
 
Team USA's NACAC Under-23 team consisted of two athletes per individual event provided that both athletes met the NACAC Under 23 standard. Athletes werechosen based upon the USATF performance rank order list (June 2, 2010), for all age-eligible athletes.
 
Along with the U.S., other nations which competed were Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Aruba, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Canada, Cayman Islands, Costa Rica, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Montserrat, Netherlands Antilles, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, El Salvador, St. Kitts/ Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, The Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, Turk and Caicos Islands, and United States Virgin Islands.
 
Team USA collected 74 medals to dominate the 6th NACAC Under 23 Championships. Canada finished second in the medal tally with seven gold medals, followed by Mexico (three).The NACAC Under 23 Championships is held every two years since Monterrey 2000.
 
It was quite a year for Kaufman in 2010, who also captured the NCAA Outdoor title and finished second at the NCAA Indoor Championships. The San Jose, Calif., native, currently has the fourth best mark in the country this season of 6-3.25 (1.91m) set at the Stanford Invitational in March.
