Women's Soccer Opens 2010 Season This Friday

Game Notes

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i women's soccer team kicks off its 2010 campaign with the OHANA Hotels and Resorts Soccer Shootout August 20-22 at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium. The Rainbow Wahine host Pacific and Wagner in the three-day, round-robin tournament.

UH and Pacific open the tournament on Friday, Aug. 20 at 7:00 p.m. Pacific will face Wagner on Saturday, Aug. 21 at 7:00 p.m. and the tournament will conclude with UH taking on Wagner on Sunday, Aug. 22 at 5:00 p.m.

Pacific is a familiar foe as UH has faced the Tigers in five of the last six seasons, including the last four straight. UH is 0-2-3 against Pacific during that stretch and fell to Pacific, 3-2, in Honolulu, last year. Meanwhile, UH will meet Wagner, out of Staten Island, N.Y., for the first time ever.

The Rainbow Wahine look to bounce back from a 2009 campaign in which the team registered a losing mark for just the second time in the last nine years and failed to qualify for the WAC Tournament for the first time since 2000. A total of 17 players return from last season, including senior co-captains Mari Punzal (midfielder) and Chelsea Deptula (defender). Punzal is a two-time all-WAC first-team selection, while Deptula earned all-WAC honors as a freshman and has played and started in all 60 matches in her career.

Eleven newcomers join this year's squad, including Caycie Gusman, a former standout at Rutgers University, and Karli Look, the 2010 Hawai'i State Player of the Year. The coaching staff also has fresh blood with new assistant coaches Jon Kiester and Vanessa Works.
