Grossman (19:56) and Ferguson (17:54) serve notice at 2010 MIL Cross Country Season Opener

Seabury Hall FR Dakota Grossman, who finished 9th overall among middle schoolers in the youth girls 3k at the 2010 USATF Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships, and Maui Prep SR Zach Ferguson claimed individual titles at the Maui Interscholastic League's Cross Country season opener yesterday (Saturday) at Hana.

 

Grossman (19:56) outpaced the pack, including the second place finisher, Lyssa Freitas (22:16), of Maui High School, by over 2 minutes, while Ferguson (17:54) edged Baldwin JR James Pearson (17:58) on the challenging 3-mile course up-country at Hana High School.

 

In all, 5 Seabury Hall girls finished in the top 10 to lead the Lady Spartans to their team title (29-37) over Baldwin High School. The Bears top finisher was Ellie Bio, finishing fourth in 23:01. The Lady Spartans were assisted by third place finisher Emily Peck (22:17), Olivia Pagel (23:02), who finished 5th, and Roxanne Gaedeke (23:33) and Justine Malek (23:35.25) who finished 8th and 9th respectively.

 

For the boys, it was the third place finisher Rocky Balala (18:14) who led the Maui High School Sabres to their team title (32-43) over Ferguson and the Maui Prep Pueo. Balala was assisted by teammates Angelito Cuaresma (18:20) Aldrin Calilao (18:57) Jordan Moracco (19:16) and Leonel Tumacder (19:30), who finished 4th, 6th 8th and 11th respectively.
