Late Field Goal Lifts Warriors Over Army

WEST POINT, N.Y. – In a roller coaster of a game, the University of Hawai'i Warrior football team pulled off a dramatic 31-28 road win over Army Saturday afternoon at Michie Stadium. Scott Enos' 31-yard field goal with seven seconds remaining proved the game winner as UH moved to 1-1 on the season.
 
UH secured the win only after a wild turn of events. The Warriors took a 21-0 lead to start the game, surrendered four straight Army touchdowns to fall behind, but eventually snatched the victory away from the Black Knights (1-1) with the final 10 points of the game.
 
With the score tied, 28-28 and less than a minute remaining, the Black Knights (1-1) looked poised to take the lead as they moved the ball into UH territory. But Kamalu Umu forced an Army fumble, preventing an Army field goal attempt and giving UH the ball at their own 27-yard line
 
UH had just 24 seconds to work with and moved the ball all the way to the Army 14-yard line in less than 15 seconds thanks to an Army penalty and a pair of Royce Pollard catches, including a 31-yard grab that set up the game-winning score.
 
That sequences of events came after an exciting first 59 minutes of action.  The Warriors came out strong, scoring on three of its first four possessions and showed no ill effects in traveling the longest distance ever for a road football game. The Warriors got touchdown receptions from Pollard, Rodney Bradley and Kealoha Pilares and were up 21-0 early on. Meanwhile, the UH defense held firm. Army didn't pick up a first down until midway through the second quarter when UH was already up by three touchdowns.
 
But things turned late in the second quarter, After being stuffed on its first three drives, the Black Knights finally got on the board with 4:30 left in the half on  a 13-play, 75-yard drive capped by 4-yard Malcolm Brown rush.
 
UH out-gained Army 240-99 in the first half to take a 21-7 lead into the locker room, but things Army scored three touchdowns in the pivotal third quarter, including two off of Warrior turnovers. After recovering a UH's second fumble of the half, Army took is first lead of the game, 28-21, when Max Jenkins gave scored on  a 1-yard run with 5:35 left in the third quarter.
 
The Warriors responded on their next possession with a 65-yard drive. Alex Green scored on a 3-yard rush to make it, 28-28, and set up an exciting finish in the fourth quarter.
 
Bryant Moniz finished with his fifth career 300-yard game after posting 343 yards and three touchdowns on 25-of-36 attempts. Pilares hauled in six of those passes for 104 yards and a touchdown.
 
Corey Paredes (14) and George Daily-Lyles (12) led the UH defense with 26 combined tackles. Meanwhile, freshman John Hardy-Tuliau blocked UH's first kick in two years when he denied Army's 37-yard attempt midway in the fourth quarter that kept the game tied. UH out-gained the Black Knights, 353-308.
 
The Warriors will now remain on the mainland as they prepare for a second straight road game at Colorado on Saturday, Sept. 18. Kickoff is 1:30 p.m. MT (9:30 a.m. HT) at Folsom Field.
