HONOLULU – The No. 4 University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine volleyball team took a break from conference play to easily handle cross-town rival Hawai'i Pacific 25-14, 25-7 and 25-22 before a crowd of 5,915 at the Stan Sheriff Center Friday night. With their 15^th straight sweep, UH extended its number of consecutive sets won to 47, the longest streak in the nation.

 

In their first meeting since the 2001 season, the Rainbow Wahine (23-1) simply over-ran HPU (16-6) in the first two sets, before holding off a game Sea Warrior squad in the third and final set. UH improved to a perfect 6-0 all-time against HPU.

 

It was another balanced effort by the Rainbow Wahine who hit .346 for the match and saw 13 players see action. Junior Chanteal Satele posted a match high-eight kills and added four blocks, while Brittany Hewitt recorded six kills, five blocks and a .545 hitting percentage in just two sets played. Kanani Danielson hit .455 with five kills, eight digs and two aces also in two sets work.

 

HPU hung tough early in the match as the first set was tied at 5-5. But UH reeled off seven straight points to take command and eventually rolled to a 25-14 win behind .452 hitting.

 

The Sea Warriors went up 2-1 to start the second match, but the lead was short-lived as the Rainbow Wahine went on a 17-3 run. That run put UH up 19-4 and the Rainbow Wahine eventually took the second set by a dominating 25-7 margin.

 

For the second straight match, head coach Dave Shoji went for a youthful lineup in the third set as four freshman started. The teams went point-for-point through the first six points, before UH slowly pulled out front by a 16-11 score. The Sea Warriors pull within two late in the set but it would be as close as they would get with UH eventually shutting the door, 25-22.

 

Prior to the match, UH held its annual alumnae match with the Green and White splitting a pair of sets, both by a 30-28 score.  

 

The Rainbow Wahine return to Western Athletic Conference play next week with a three-mach road swing through Fresno State (Nov. 11), San Jose State (Nov. 13) and Nevada (Nov. 14). UH look to maintain its nation-long streak of 37 straight conference wins.
