Women’s Basketball Pulls Away From Chaminade, 74-34

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai`i women's basketball team opened its 2010-11 campaign with a 74-34 win over Chaminade in an exhibition game tonight at the Stan Sheriff Center in front of a crowd of 1,710. Freshman Kamilah Jackson led UH with 15 points and nine rebounds, both game-highs.
     
Jackson was 7-for-8 from the floor and had five offensive and four defensive boards coming off the bench. Senior Megan Tinnin and freshman Sydney Haydel both tallied nine points. Tinnin made her return to the hardwood after taking a redshirt year last season. She grabbed six rebounds, and two assists on the night, while Haydel went 7-of-8 from the free-throw line. Freshman Shawna-Lei Kuehu started in her return, after a season-ending injury curtailed rookie campaign five games into last year. Kuehu led the squad with five assists and chipped in five points with three rebounds.
 
Chaminade started the first half strong, scoring the first five points of the game. But the 'Bows roared back, scoring 17 straight points to take a commanding 17-5 lead. Jackson led UH at the half going 3-for-3 with a free throw for seven points and a team-high four rebounds. While senior Keisha Kanekoa sunk a pair of three-pointers for six points with three rebounds and three assists.
 
In the second half, the Rainbow Wahine outscored the Silverswords 31-14 to pull away led by Jackson's eight points and four boards. Hawai`i outrebounded Chaminade 43-17.

Chaminade head coach, Bobby Keanini made his debut with the Silverswords. Kristen Canencia led the 'Swords with nine points and three assists while Jamie Higa led Chaminade with five rebounds.
 
Hawai`i will next face BYU-Hawai`i in another exhibition game next week Thursday, Nov. 11 at 7:05 p.m. The Rainbow Wahine open their season on Nov. 19 against CS Northridge on the opening day of the Jack in the Box Rainbow Wahine Classic.
