Greg McMackin's Weekly Press Conference

HONOLULU – University of Hawai`i Warrior football head coach Greg McMackin conducted his weekly press conference Monday, recapping the team's road loss at nationally ranked Boise State and looking ahead to UH's next home game against San Jose State on Nov. 20.

Recapping the Boise State game…
Boise in my mind—and as everyone saw on the field—was as advertised. They dominated us, their quarterback was on fire, they have some pro-type receivers. Their offensive line was the best that we've gone against. Defensively, nobody has shut us down like they did since the Sugar Bowl and it was primarily off of the pass rush. They didn't bring more than five, but they tighten it up so much that (quarterback Bryant Moniz), who's a scrambler couldn't get out of there. They did a good job, they covered our guys.

On the effect of slot receiver Kealoha Pilares sitting out…
I don't think one guy can make that much of a difference. Dustin Blout is not a bad player. I don't think it was because of that. I think that allowed them to take Greg (Salas) away, but we have other people. I think they just did a good job with their pass rush. I think they covered our guys really well. I can see why they're in the top five offensively and defensively.

On the positives from the game…
I thought Alex Green played a good game. Obviously, Mana Silva picked (Kellen Moore) twice, and he's only been picked two or three times all year long. And then (long snapper) Luke Ingram and Alex Dunnachie did a great job punting the ball. They had a great returner, and our plan was to kick it out of bounds as far down the field as we could so he couldn't run with it, and he (Dunnachie) averaged 44 yards. So that was good.

I know our players, they didn't quit in this ball game. We scored at the end, we got the picks at the end. If we wouldn't have got the turnovers it would have been a lot worse than that. We've been beaten by Boise a lot bigger than that score. Our guys weren't quitting. They just have the best team they've ever had since I've been here.

On rebounding from the loss…
This is our bye week, but we're going to work for the next three days. After today we're going to start working on San Jose State. We had our chance, we didn't get it done. Not many people beat them (Boise State) there. So we're going to move on to the next game. We don't want to be like a James Madison either. We fought through the Fresnos and Nevada (and) had a nice streak going. These aren't gimmes coming up. Virgina Tech lost to James Madison after they lost to Boise State. We can't afford to do that.
