Men’s Basketball Inks Second Recruit In Early Signing Period

HONOLULU – University of Hawai`i men's basketball coach Gib Arnold announced the signing of Gerry Blakes to a national letter of intent during the early signing period. Blakes will enroll at UH next fall and will have four years of eligibility.

Blakes, a 6-4, 175- lb combo guard, comes to UH from Morningside High School in Inglewood, Calif.  Blakes will play his senior season at Morningside after transferring from Leuzinger High School. While at Leuzinger he helped the team to a CIF Southern Section championship. Blakes sat out much of his junior season with an injury, but enjoyed a breakout summer while competing in numerous AAU Tournament, showcasing his skill and savvy on both ends of the court.

“With the addition of Gerry, we got an athletic combo guard who has the skill to run the point and the size and ability to play the wing.” Arnold said. “Having not played last year, he didn't get on the national radar, but I believe he is true sleeper on the West Coast. Signing him and Ronnie (Stevens) gives us two kids from winning programs in Los Angeles, a place that will continue to serve as our recruiting hub.”

Blakes is the second high school product to join UH within the week. Ronnie Stevens, a 6-8 forward out of Serra High in Gardena, Calif., also signed with the Rainbow Warriors.
