Keisha Kanekoa led UH with a game-high 19 points while freshman forward
Kamilah Jackson grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds on the opening night of the Jack in the Box Rainbow Wahine Classic at the Stan Sheriff Center on Friday night.
Kanekoa had a solid performance to start the year. She also had a game-high four steals and chipped in with four rebounds in 26 minutes played. Junior forward
Breanna Arbuckle added 14 points with two blocked shots and four rebounds while going 6-of-8 from the free-throw line. Redshirt freshman
Shawna-Lei Kuehu marked her return to the court (after a season-ending injury curtailed her season last year) with a 10 point, eight rebound performance.
The Rainbow Wahine took a 36-28 lead into half-time with Kanekoa leading the 'Bows with 11 points and two rebounds. Arbuckle scored seven points and Kuehu had six points and four boards.
Megan Tinnin led UH with four assists while
Rebecca Dew grabbed five rebounds.
The 'Bows started the game off hot, scoring the first nine points of the game. Hawai`i never trailed in the game and built a lead as big as 16 points in the second half.
The Matadors were led by Violet Alama, who tallied team-highs with 16 points and eight rebounds. The game marked a return trip home for Alama as well as Janelle Nomura and Analee Viena-Lota who are all from O`ahu.
In the early game, Oregon State (2-0) defeated Eastern Michigan (1-2) 59-44. The Beavers had three players tally double figures in points. Sage Indendi led OSU with 14 points and Alexis Bostick and Alyssa Martin both had 12 points a piece. El Sara Greer was strong on the boards, securing a game-high 13 rebounds and six blocked shots to go with her eight points. Eastern Michigan's India Hairston led the Eagles with 12 points.
Hawai`i continues action in the Rainbow Wahine Classic tomorrow in a game against Eastern Michigan at 3:00 p.m. Oregon State and Cal State Northridge follow with the day's second game at 5:00 p.m.
