Women's Basketball Hosts Waikiki Beach Marriott Rainbow Wahine Showdown

Tournament Notes

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team (2-1) hosts the 2010 Waikiki Beach Marriott Rainbow Wahine Showdown this week, Friday, Nov. 26 - Sunday, Nov. 28 at the Stan Sheriff Center. The eight-team tournament features No. 14 North Carolina (4-0), Gonzaga (1-2), Illinois (2-2), Long Beach State (0-4), Mississippi (3-1), North Carolina Central (1-1), and Washington State (0-4).

The Rainbow Wahine--under the direction of second year head coach Dana Takahara-Dias--went 2-1 in their opening week of play, earning wins over Cal State Northridge and Oregon State while falling to Eastern Michigan. Junior Breanna Arbuckle led UH averaging 14.3 points per game to go with her team-high five blocks. She also averaged 6.0 rebounds per game and has gone to the free-throw line 28 times in three games. Arbuckle became just the fourth UH player to earn Rainbow Wahine Classic Most Valuable Player honors, and is the first player since Nani Cockett earned the award in 1997. She joins elite company in Rainbow Wahine history with only Judy Mosley (1989), Melanie Azama (1993), and Cockett to be named MVP in the 31-year history of the tournament.

Senior guard, Megan Tinnin, returned from a redshirt season last year and has found her shooting stroke, leading the 'Bows with nine three-pointers (.409) while averaging 10.0 points per game. On defense, she has swiped a team-best eight steals while blocking three shots and averaging 3.0 rebounds per game. With her nine three-point shots made this past weekend, Tinnin overtook Jade Abele, Kylie (Page) Galloway, and Janevia Taylor (who were all tied with 117 career 3-pointers) for second place in UH career history. Tinnin, who has 125 career 3-pointers, is now just three treys shy of tying former UH great, Nani Cockett's UH career record of 128 set in 1998. Tinnin already owns the single-season UH 3-point record of 55, which she set as a junior in 2008-09.

Fellow senior guard, Keisha Kanekoa has also posted strong numbers through the first three games, averaging 9.0 points per game with a team-high 12 assists along with seven steals. Kanekoa is also closing in on a career record. She has now scored 887 points in her four years at Hawai'i and is just 113 points away from becoming just the 16th member of UH's 1,000 point club.

True-freshman Kamilah Jackson has been strong on the glass, leading UH with 25 rebounds (12 offensive, 13 defensive) for a team-high average of 8.3 per game. Shawna-Lei Kuehu, a redshirt freshman, made her return to the court after missing most of last year to an injury. She filled the stats line on the opening week, averaging 8.7 points per game with 22 rebounds, 10 assists, one block, and five steals.

The Rainbow Wahine open the tournament with the North Carolina Central Lady Eagles out of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. (MEAC) on Friday, Nov. 26 at 7:00 p.m. Regardless of the outcome, UH will always play the 7:00 p.m. game during the tournament.
