Women’s Basketball Sweeps Kent State With Back-to-Back Wins

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team beat Kent State for a second straight night Wednesday, pulling out a 63-60 win in the Waikiki Beach Marriott Showdown at the Stan Sheriff Center. 

The Rainbow Wahine improve to 6-7 on the year after beating Kent State by one point on Tuesday night and by three on Wednesday. UH ends its non-conference schedule and begins WAC play on Jan. 6.

UH used a balanced scoring attack from a variety of players Wednesday night. Four Rainbow Wahine scored in double-figures and two players had nine points.

Junior Leilani Galdones led the way with 15 points, including three 3-pointers and Breanna Arbuckle, Allie Patterson and Mai Ayabe each had 10 points.

Ayabe and Patterson came off the bench to score 10 points each, with Ayabe scoring a career-high, in a career-high 26 minutes.

Sophomore Rebecca Dew dominated the boards with a career-high 15 rebounds and added nine points. As a team, UH had 46 rebounds to Kent State's 30.

In the first half, the Rainbow Wahine closed on a 12-0 run to take a 31-29 lead at the break. UH was sparked by Ayabe, who scored seven points and grabbed three rebounds coming off the bench.

UH shot 36.1 percent from the field in the first half, and for the second straight night played solid defense, holding Kent State to 29.6 percent shooting in the half.

The Rainbow Wahine outrebounded the Golden Flashes, 30-12, led by Dew, who had 12 rebounds in the first 20 minutes. UH had 12 offensive rebounds, compared to Kent State's one.

UH begins Western Athletic Conference play next week, opening with two road games. UH faces Fresno State on Wednesday, Jan. 6 and New Mexico State on Saturday, Jan. 9.
