Women’s Basketball Drops WAC Opener Against Fresno State

FRESNO, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team began Western Athletic Conference play with an 83-42 loss against Fresno State on Wednesday night at the Save Mart Center in Fresno, Calif. 

The Rainbow Wahine begin conference play with back-to-back road games, facing New Mexico State on Saturday, Jan. 9 at 7 p.m. in Las Cruces, N.M. UH drops to 6-8 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

Offensively, Keisha Kanekoa led the way with 11 points, going 5-for-11 from the field, including 1-for-1 from 3-point range. 

Briauna Linton had seven points off the bench, Leilani Galdones added six points and Mai Ayabe had five points off the bench.

For the game, UH shot 36.2 percent from the field and 28.6 percent from 3-point range. Fresno State shot 51.7 percent from the field and shot 46.7 percent from 3-point range. 

In the first half, UH and Fresno State played tight early on, with the score tied 9-9 with 13:23 left in the half. The Bulldogs pulled away later in the half, taking a 42-19 lead at the break.

Kanekoa led the way with nine points in the first half and Galdones added five points and four rebounds. UH shot 31.8 percent from the field, while Fresno State shot 43.8 percent. 

The Rainbow Wahine conclude their two-game road trip against New Mexico State on Saturday, Jan. 9 at 7 p.m. MT (4 p.m. HT)
