Arbuckle’s Career High Leads To Women’s Basketball Victory

HONOLULU – University of Hawai'i sophomore forward Breanna Arbuckle scored a career-high 18 points, leading to UH's 62-52 victory over Idaho on Wednesday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. The Rainbow Wahine picked up their first WAC victory of the season.

The Rainbow Wahine improve to 7-9 overall and 1-2 in Western Athletic Conference play. Idaho fell to 2-13 overall and 0-2 in conference action.

Arbuckle had a strong second half, helping UH pull away in a game that was tied at halftime. Arbuckle scored 12 of her career-high 18 points in the second half and added six rebounds and three blocks.

Keisha Kanekoa had 15 points, eight rebounds and five assists and Julita Bungaite added nine points coming off the bench.

UH had one of its better shooting halves of the year in the final 20 minutes, hitting 57.7 percent of its shots. The Rainbow Wahine went 15-of-26 from the field, including 2-of-5 from 3-point range, to help give them a 10-point advantage in the second half.

The Rainbow Wahine also played excellent defense, holding Idaho to a 25 percent shooting percent for the game. UH also had 10 blocked shots, including four from Bungaite and three from Arbuckle.

The Rainbow Wahine began the game on a 10-0 run over the first five minutes, but the Vandals rallied back to tie the game 26-26 at the break.

UH had a balanced scoring attack in the first half, led by Arbuckle and Kanekoa, who each had six points. Dita Liepkalne and Leilani Galdones each added five points, while Rebecca Dew and Kanekoa grabbed four rebounds.

As a team, UH shot 37.9 percent from the field and 25 percent from 3-point range. The UH defense held Idaho to 26.5 percent shooting in the first half. UH also had six blocked shots, including three by Arbuckle.

The Rainbow Wahine continue their three-game homestand against Nevada on Saturday, Jan. 16 at 7 p.m. Prior to the game, UH will hold its annual Alumnae Game, which begin at 5 p.m.
