’Bows Host Peter Wenner Rainbow Invite This Weekend

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai`i sailing team kicks off its spring season this weekend hosting the Peter Wenner Rainbow Invite, Jan. 16-17. Sixteen different teams, representing 11 schools, including host UH, will descend on Keehi Lagoon for the annual regatta.

The event will feature a variety of teams, stretching from coast to coast. Cal Maritime, Cal Poly, Salve Regina (Rhode Island), Stanford, UC Santa Barbara, UC Santa Cruz, USC, UC Irvine, UCLA, and UC San Diego will join two UH teams in the coed division. Hawai`i will also feature a women's team, along with Stanford, UCLA and USC.

The regatta is named after former Rainbow sailor Peter Wenner, who tragically lost his life in a recreational boating accident in November 2008. Wenner was a member of UH's 2007 PCCSC Sloop Championship squad that went on to participate in the Sloop Nationals. This will be the second year that the Rainbow Invite honors Wenner and his untimely passing.

UH has traditionally excelled in the Rainbow Invite but look to regain the regatta title after finishing as runner-up to Brown University last year.
