No. 3 Cal Sweeps Past Rainbow Wahine

HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i women's tennis team opened the 2010 spring season with a 7-0  loss to Pac-10 powerhouse and No. 3 California, Thursday at the UH Tennis Complex.

The Rainbow Wahine dropped all three doubles matches to lose the doubles point. Sophomores Alyssa Nafarrete and Barbara Pinterova fell in a competitive 8-6 match to Marina Cossou and Kasia Siwosz at the No. 2 position.

In singles play, the Golden Bears, who boast three nationally-ranked singles players, swept all six matches in straight sets to earn the victory. On the No. 1 court, senior Sophie Kobuch gave No. 2 Jana Juricova all she could handle in the first set, before falling, 6-4, 6-1. Cal's other two ranked players had a decidedly easier time as No. 10 Cossou defeated Pinterova, 6-1, 6-2, on the No. 2 court and No. 83 Mari Andersson took down Nafarrete, 6-0, 6-1, on the No. 3 court. Cal also swept through wins on Courts 4, 5 and 6.

The Rainbow Wahine look to bounce back from the loss as they face No. 67 Nevada in the Western Athletic Conference opener for both teams on Sunday, Jan. 17. First serve is set for 2:30 p.m. at the UH Tennis Complex.
