Men’s Volleyball Swept At No. 3 Stanford

STANFORD, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team was swept by No. 3 Stanford, 30-15, 30-21, 30-18, Friday in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opener for both teams at Maples Pavilion.
 
UH (2-2, 0-1 MPSF) was led by freshman Jonas Umlauft, who posted 11 kills and was the lone Warrior in double-figures. Middle blocker Matt Rawson had seven kills and hit .545 while outside hitter Steven Hunt came off the bench and tallied eight kills in 13 swings. Reining MPSF player of the week Joshua Walker was held to six kills and seven errors in 22 attempts.
 
The Cardinal (1-0, 1-0) featured a well-balanced attack led by Evan Romero and Brad Lawson, who each recorded 13 kills. Spencer McLachlin and Garrett Werner chipped in with seven kills. As a team, Stanford hit .494 and out-blocked UH, 10.5 to 3. The Cardinal also served up 10 aces compared to none for the Warriors.
 
Stanford broke open the first set with a 12-4 run, including five straight, for a 19-10 advantage. The Cardinal hit .650 in the opening frame and held the Warriors to .065.
 
Set 2 was much like the same with Stanford jumping out to a 9-3 lead and the Warriors could not get within five the rest of the way. The Cardinal served up six aces in the period including four by Lawson.
 
The Warriors shot themselves in the foot in the third set by committing five straight hitting errors out of the gates. Hawai'i rallied to within 10-7 but the Cardinal relied on Romero and McLachlin, who combined for nine kills, with no errors, in 14 attempts.
 
For the match, the eighth-ranked Warriors hit .113 while three starters hit for negative percentages.
 
The teams play again on Saturday. First serve is 7:00 p.m. PT (5:00 p.m. HT) at Maples Pavilion.
