HONOLULU - The No. 41 University of Hawai`i men's tennis team completed a perfect weekend to start the season with a 5-2 win over UC Santa Barbara Monday at the UH Tennis Complex. The Rainbow Warriors improved to 3-0 overall after sweeping Saint Mary's, Nevada and the Gauchos (1-1) on consecutive days.
UC Santa Barbara, the reigning Big West Conference champions, started the dual match by sweeping UH on all three doubles court to take the doubles point. But UH responded with five of six wins in singles. UH's top four players,
Dennis Lajola,
Andreas Weber,
Jeremy Tweedt and
Leo Rosenberg all won in straight sets. Each of those four players went a perfect 3-0 in singles action during the weekend. Meanwhile at court No. 5,
Philipp Eberhard battled to a 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (8) win over Taylor Chavez for UH's fifth point of the day. The Gauchos lone singles win came at the No. 6 position where Lucas Sudow won 6-2, 6-0 over freshman
Dmytro Kovalyov, who made his dual match debut for the Rainbow Warriors.
UH will now play its next nine matches on the road, beginning with the ITA National Indoors Kickoff Weekend at UCLA on Saturday, Jan. 30. Prior to that, a pair of Rainbow Warriors—Lajola and Rosenberg—will compete in the USTA Honolulu Pro Challenger beginning on Sunday, Jan. 24.
