Women’s Basketball Closes Homestand With Victory Over Utah State

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team used a balanced scoring attack and closed its three-game homestand with a 69-56 victory over Utah State on Monday at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The Rainbow Wahine improve to 8-10 overall and 2-3 in Western Athletic Conference play with the victory. Utah State fell to 10-8 overall and 2-3 in conference play. UH finished its three-game homestand with a 2-1 record.

UH was led by junior Leilani Galdones, who recorded her first career double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Galdones went 3-for-5 from 3-point range and added two assists.

Four players scored in double figures, along with Galdones, Dita Liepkalne scored 12 points and added eight rebounds and Breanna Arbuckle and Allie Patterson each had 11 points.

The Rainbow Wahine had a strong effort off the bench, scoring 22 points, including 11 from Patterson and eight by Briauna Linton.

In the first half, UH jumped in front early 20-10 and led by as many as 13 points with six minutes left in the half. But Utah State made a late rally and tied the game 31-31 at the break.

The Rainbow Wahine had a balanced scoring attack in the first half, with Galdones leading the way with six points. Patterson, Linton and Keisha Kanekoa each had five points and Arbuckle added four points and five rebounds.

Both teams were even in the first half, each shooting 36 percent from the field, each committing nine turnovers and each making five free throws.

The Rainbow Wahine hit the road for two games this week, at Louisiana Tech on Thursday, Jan. 21 and at Boise State on Saturday, Jan. 23. UH plays at 7 p.m. CT (3 p.m. HT) against Louisiana Tech and at 7 p.m. MT (4 p.m. HT) against Boise State.
