Men’s Basketball Squares Off Against The WAC Elite

Game Notes

Hiram Thompson shoots over Boise St. 2010
HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i Rainbow Warrior basketball team continues its three-game Western Athletic Conference homestand by hosting the top two teams in the league standings, beginning with New Mexico State, Thursday, Jan. 21. Tip-off is 7:05 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The Rainbow Warriors (9-9, 2-3 WAC) started the homestand with a dramatic 68-67 win over San Jose State on Sunday night. Hiram Thompson sank two free throws with 2.1 seconds left to lift UH to the victory over the Spartans. It was a huge bounce back for the 'Bows who returned home following a 44-point drubbing at Utah State, the worst conference loss in program history. With a 2-3 mark Hawai'i currently sits in a tie for sixth place in the WAC.

New Mexico State (11-7), meanwhile, has won three straight games and is near the top of the WAC standings with a 4-1 mark. The Aggies are in second-place, just one game behind first-place Louisiana Tech. New Mexico State is coming off an 86-77 home win over Fresno State on Saturday night and has already won its first two first conference road games of the year at Boise State (88-85) and Idaho (75-72).

The 'Bows have historically struggled against New Mexico State, winning just twice in 11 all-time meetings. The Aggies have won the last three meetings, including a 70-59 win in Honolulu in UH's 2008-09 home finale.

UH will play the final of three straight home games on Saturday, Jan. 23 with a meeting versus first-place Louisiana Tech (17-2, 5-0 WAC) at 7:05 p.m.
