Box Score

STOCKTON, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team swept the University of the Pacific, 30-21, 30-26, 30-22 Wednesday at the Alex G. Spanos Center and in the process took both matches of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation series.

After rallying for a four-set victory on Tuesday, the Warriors (4-3, 2-2 MPSF) made quick work of the Tigers behind a balanced attack. Opposite Jonas Umlauft led the way with 15 kills while outside hitters Joshua Walker (11) and Steven Hunt (10) also reached double digits. Middle blocker Matt Rawson posted eight kills and four blocks.

First-time starters Hunt and Brennon Dyer quickly made their presence known as Hawai'i built a 5-2 lead in Set 1. UH extended its lead to 16-9 at the midway point, with a pair of kills by Umlauft and a block and kill by Hunt. The lead was 22-11 after a pair of aces by Hunt and the Warriors closed out the set with Umlauft's eighth kill.

The teams traded blows for the better part of Set 2, with the lead exchanging sides eight times. With the score tied at 25 – following Gornick's seventh kill – Steven Grgas pounded his only kill of the match for UH and Taylor Hughes hit wide. After a UOP point, the Tigers then shot themselves in the foot, hitting out on three straight points, giving UH the 30-26 victory.

The Warriors dominated Set 3 with their big block and at the service line where the Tigers committed four service errors and coupled with three Hawai'i aces. UH jumped out to an 11-7 lead and extended it to 21-11. Hunt ended it at 30-22 with his 10th kill.

Jason Borchin led the Tigers (4-4, 0-4) with 12 kills while Florian Gornick added 10 kills but hit only .125.

UH extended its win streak over the Tigers to 26 consecutive matches. The series was also a homecoming for UH head coach Charlie Wade and associate coach Dan Fisher. Wade spent the past three seasons in charge of UOP's women's volleyball program while Fisher was a two-year starter for the Tigers from 1998-99.

Hawai'i returns to the Stan Sheriff Center for the start of a five-week homestand beginning with defending NCAA champion UC Irvine, Jan. 29 & 30.
