San Jose State Shoots Down Hawai`i, 83-60

Box Score

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The University of Hawai`i men's basketball team suffered another rough road loss, falling to San Jose State, 83-60, Thursday night at the Event Center. The Rainbow Warriors fell to 9-12 overall and 2-6 in the Western Athletic Conference with their third straight loss.

The Rainbow Warriors remain winless in four road games this year and dropped to a tie for seventh in the WAC standings with Idaho. With their third straight win the Spartans (12-8, 5-3) moved into sole possession of fourth place in the WAC and avenged a 68-67 loss to the 'Bows just 11 days ago.

Leading the way for SJSU was junior guard Adrian Oliver, who exploded for 33 points, the most by a UH opponent this year. The reigning conference and national player of the week shot 12-of-18 from the field and buried all three of his 3-point attempts.

Roderick Flemings led UH with 19 points, while adding four rebounds, three assists and three steals. Jeremy Lay finished with 12 points and a team-high four assists.

San Jose State was in control of the game from the get-go. UH held a lead just once, 7-6, five minutes into the game and it was a brief lead at that. The Spartans went back ahead just 35 seconds later and held a stranglehold for the rest of the way.

UH stayed within striking distance for much of the first half but went scoreless for nearly four minutes, allowing the Spartans to stretch a 14-point lead. UH scored the last five points of the half to cut the lead into single digits, 41-32, at the break.

The Spartans, however, didn't leave the door. Unlike the last two meetings which came down to the wire, the Spartans put the game away by expanding its lead in the second half to as many as 27 points.

Next up for the Rainbow Warriors is a nationally televised game at Nevada on Saturday, Jan. 30. The game will be broadcast on ESPNU with a tipoff set for 7:00 p.m. PT (5:00 p.m. HT).
