HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team raced out to a two sets to none lead then rallied for a five set victory over defending national champion UC Irvine Friday night in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at the Stan Sheriff Center. The match scores were 30-28, 30-20, 27-30, 26-30, 20-18.

The Warriors (5-3, 3-2 MPSF) were led by Jonas Umlauft's 37 kills, a new UH rally-scoring record and most for a Warrior since Torry Tukuafu and Clay Stanley hit for 39 kills each during the 2000 season. More impressively, Umlauft hit 42.4 percent and had only nine errors in 66 swings. Also notable was outside hitter Joshua Walker's 22 kills on 40 percent hitting. Middle blocker Matt Rawson pounded 12 kills on 52.9 percent and was in on a team-high eight blocks. As a team, the Warriors hit .375.

For the Anteaters (5-5, 1-4), Carson Clark had a team-high 29 kills while Jordan DuFault added 19 kills and 12 digs.

In the fifth and deciding set, the Warriors held off five match points with Umlauft ending three of those rallies. At 18-17, the German pounded his 36th kill to tie the set and followed with his 37th rocket giving UH its first match point. And the Warriors would not waste any time as Walker and Matt Rawson teamed to stuff Clark sending the crowd into a frenzy and putting an end to a three hour, 17 minute rollercoaster match.

The Warriors seemed to have the match under control winning Sets 1 and 2. In a back and forth Set 1, Hawai'i scored on consecutive points with an Umlauft kill and a Steven Hunt and Rawson block Clark. With UH leading 29-28, Clark hit long giving the Warriors the early match lead.

In Set 2, Hawai'i found some separation at 9-5 after a pair of Umlauft kills. After the Anteaters pulled to within 9-7, the Warriors scored eight of the next 10 points, including three more kills by Umlauft, for a commanding 17-9 lead. Hawai'i cruised the rest of the way for a 30-20 win.

The Warriors jumped out to a 5-0 lead in Set 3 before the Anteaters chipped away and tied the game at 13. The teams traded leads until the Anteaters scored consecutive points on a Clark kill and Zemljak setting error. A big UCI block of Umlauft and Hunt hitting error gave UCI set point and the Aneaters finished off the Warriors after DuFault's 13th kill.

UCI jumped out to a 5-1 lead in Set 4. The Anteaters pushed their lead to 15-9, scoring five of six, at the media timeout. UCI led 21-15 forcing UH head coach Charlie Wade to use his second timeout. The Warriors scored three straight to pull within 22-19 but it wouldn't be enough as Anteaters closed out the set 30-26.

The teams will battle it out again on Saturday. First serve is 7:00 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.
