Women’s Basketball Drops Hard Fought Game Against Fresno State

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team gave a great performance Saturday night against WAC leader Fresno State, but fell just short in the end, 78-69 at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The Rainbow Wahine (9-13, 3-6 WAC) held Fresno State (18-5, 9-0 WAC) to just 25 percent shooting (4-16) from 3-point range and shot 46.3 percent from the field as a team in the loss.

Junior Leilani Galdones scored a career-high 20 points, including 15 in the second half and hit two 3-pointers to lead UH in scoring.

Three players scored in double figures, following Galdones was Keisha Kanekoa, who scored 14 points and had eight assists and Breanna Arbuckle had 11 points and five rebounds.

UH played a tight game against the first place team in conference, exchanging leads four times and the score was tied five times.

In the first half, the Rainbow Wahine played solid defense and held the game tight, as Fresno State led 35-30 at the break.

The UH defense held Fresno State to 3-for-12 from 3-point range in the first half and 36.8 percent from the field. The Rainbow Wahine shot 45.8 percent from the field and went 7-for-9 from the free throw line.

Kanekoa led the offense with nine points and five assists, while Galdones added five points. Briauna Linton came off the bench to add four points and six rebounds, including three offensive rebounds.

The Rainbow Wahine wrap up their three-game homestand against New Mexico State on Wednesday, Feb. 10 at 7 p.m., before hitting the road for three games.
