Women’s Water Polo Splits A Pair Of Games On First Day Stanford Invite

STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 3 University of Hawai`i women's water polo team (5-2, 0-1 MPSF) opened the Stanford Invitational Saturday with an 11-7 victory over ninth-ranked Arizona State, but ended the day with a 9-8 loss against No. 5 UCLA.

UH started its first match against the Sun Devils with a strong 3-1 run in the first quarter and continued with a 3-1 repeat in the second. The Rainbow Wahine held a comfortable 6-2 lead by halftime.

ASU picked up its second half, keeping up with UH 3-3 in the third quarter and 2-2 in the final but were unable to recover from a three-point deficit. The Rainbow Wahine held onto their lead beating the Sun Devils 11-7. Leonie Van Der Molen led UH with four goals.

The Rainbow Wahine returned to the pool in the evening for the final match of day one against UCLA. UH began the match rallying against the Bruins for a 2-2 tie in the first quarter but fell off in the second with one goal to UCLA's three. By halftime, the Bruins held a manageable 5-3 lead.

Beginning the second half, UH lagged just behind UCLA 3-4 in the third. In the final quarter, the Rainbow Wahine fought in two more goals and kept the Bruins scoreless but could not climb back in time ending the night with a 9-8 loss.

Sophomore Monika Eggens performed a hat trick, leading the Rainbow Wahine in goal scoring. Van Der Molen also added two for UH.
